For my Professional Development Module 3 project, I focused on teaching someone how to play the drums. This idea came from my previous module, where I discovered that I enjoy teaching and wanted to explore this further as part of developing my professional (soft) skills.
During this project, I taught a student named Jamie the basics of drumming. I used different teaching methods that I researched online, such as the “I do – We do – You do” approach, and techniques, staying structured and regularly checking in to maintain empathy and understanding.
I also used online resources, such as drum teaching platforms, to guide the content of my lessons and make sure I focused on the right fundamentals. This helped me structure my lessons better and improve my teaching approach over time.
Through this experience, I learned that teaching is both challenging and enjoyable. I noticed that having a clear goal before each lesson is important, and that lesson duration and structure can significantly impact how well someone learns. In the future, I would like to plan lessons more carefully, vary their length, and ideally work in a setting with better equipment (such as two drum kits) to improve demonstrations.
What I would keep the same is the relaxed and informal approach to teaching, as it made the experience more enjoyable and helped create a comfortable learning environment.
Looking back, this project confirmed that I enjoy helping others learn. I would like to continue developing my teaching skills, possibly by incorporating more theory, or explore other areas such as networking in future modules.
Below are two videos showcasing parts of this project.
